With the IAHSS Conference coming up, I thought it would be fitting to sit down with our Director of Implementation Services, Dale Yushchyshyn, for a chat about how users in the Healthcare industry benefit from our incident management application. Dale has vast experience with over 20 years in the Healthcare industry and is an awarded Certified Protection Professional and former Director of Security. He was a power user of PPM’s software at Caritas Health Group (currently known as Covenant Health) prior to taking a senior position 6 years ago with PPM 2000 to run our Professional Services department.
Frank: Dale, you were a long-time user of our Incident Reporting application. Can you tell us what you used prior, and some of the reasons that led you to PPM 2000?
Dale: The system we had before moving to PPM 2000′s software was pen and paper. We had progressed from a physical typewriter to a word processor, but at the time, even getting that one computer into our office (that wasn’t dedicated to our access control system) was difficult. Though I wasn’t directly involved in the decision to migrate from paper-based incident tracking to a computerized system, it only made sense. The ability to see people’s histories and track statistics without having to depend on staff to manually count the number of records in a filing cabinet; all were helpful features and obvious reasons for the switch.

With Perspective 3.1, the goal was to expand the visibility and flexibility of loss information for incidents so that we have the forms and reports to best track financial information as it relates to incidents. It is important to track loss information with the record of events for any incident so that metrics beyond what is occurring, and how often, can be accurately reported. By measuring the monetary impact of those incidents, costly trends can be identified, the savings of new initiatives will be known, and recovery rates of investigation can be easily demonstrated.
With Perspective 3.0 and earlier, we allowed a single loss amount to be entered for physical items and/or vehicles. With each loss, we also had the ability to track the amount of that loss that was recovered. This approach allowed us to measure simple physical losses and recoveries. Perspective’s list was preset to track direct, indirect and averted losses only, and did not have the flexibility to track any other type. Because of these limited system values, it wasn’t flexible enough to track addition loss information.

It’s Day One of our Users’ Conference and Perspective clients from all over North America (and one from Australia!) have converged on the TradeWinds resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida for two days ALL about Incident Management. It’s a sold out crowd with some high expectations.
As I was speaking with various attendees who are back for their third, fourth and, in one case, eighth conference, they all expressed how much the Users’ Conference has impacted them in the past and how… given that… they need to return home this year with even more knowledge and ideas.
So, can you really keep learning, year after year, when you’re talking about the same software system with the same fundamental purpose?

Optimizing Resources, Shrinking Losses—
Perspective at Microsoft Global Security
“Perspective makes it easy to collect, access and track data. When an incident occurs, the data goes in, and we immediately have access to the information we need to make mission critical decisions.”
—Brian Tuskan, Senior Director of Global Security Technology & Investigations, Microsoft Corporation
The fact that Microsoft Global Security uses Perspective gives everyone at PPM an incredible sense of pride and accomplishment. We recognize that they are diligent in their review of software vendors and have high expectations for the latest technology and ongoing enhancements. We are also proud of what they’ve been able to do with Perspective and, ultimately, the incidents it has helped them prevent—“By trending with Perspective, we changed our security approach and cut laptop thefts in half.”

I recently had the privilege of attending IAHSS’s 43rd Annual General Meeting in Toronto, Ontario on May 22-25, 2011. As PPM’s Director of Implementation Services, I attend many security industry trade shows, and I am always excited to interact with current and prospective clients. I see people that I’ve worked with in previous Perspective deployments together with people that I’m actively working with on current projects. It’s always nice to hear how their implementation and use of Perspective is going, especially if I’m not their active project manager.
But, with this show in particular, I was pleased to have the opportunity, not only to connect with PPM clients, but also to reminisce with colleagues that I used to work with in my previous career.
Prior to PPM, I worked in healthcare security in Edmonton, Alberta for 15 years. During that time, I was the administrator for the IRIMS program (PPM 2000’s legacy product). Having had this role in healthcare security has definitely been beneficial to me and one of my team’s other consultants, Clint St. Jean. Together, Clint and I have a combined 32 years of healthcare security experience. What this has meant to our numerous healthcare clients that have purchased Perspective is that we’re able to understand how maintaining data in the healthcare environment can be challenging to say the least.
